I was at a friend's house this summer. Their first child had just graduated HS and they were talking about the graduation party, who came, the food, the drinks, etc. Part of their story had to do with the leftovers and they thought it was just the funniest thing that they had a left over 12 pack of cherry coke in the fridge. Who brought it? Who drinks cherry coke nowadays?
Anyway, EYE sat there nodding along but inside was like "I drink cherry coke all the time, it is the best." I felt judged, but I'm happy this blog is a thing now.
Also a big cherry coke devotee over here! (One of my favorite variations on a Coke freestyle machine is a cherry vanilla diet.) Very happy to create a space for anyone who thinks a 12-pack of cherry coke is a great pick-up for a party
I am a huge fan of this. Not only of embracing your passions, but of reclaiming a bit of the Internet as a place to just exist, share and enthuse. Can’t wait to read more!
I love a movie theater root beer!! Up there with an airplane ginger ale for setting / soda combination. (A potential future newsletter topic...) And thanks for the recs -- I went to the World of Coke once as a kid and (predictably) loved it, but I'll have to add Soda Pop Stop to my list!
hi emma, big fan of your baseball work and always adore your fun little turns of phrases. how you write is so precise and clever and this is no exception.
if you ever get around to it, i would like to know your thoughts on malta morena. as a water enjoyer and a soda anti, malta morena captures everything i hate about the softdrink genre. it would be nice to know what a soda connoisseur thinks of it.
Ooh, I hadn't heard of this, but now I'll have to check it out! (There's a Dominican place close to me and I'd bet they have it.) Will keep you posted. And thank you very much for the kind words! <3
I have an arcane topic that might interest: I remember Brio Chinotto being a tad bitter for my neophyte buds the previous century, but when I was viciously hung over more recently I was craving that smack on the tongue and it seemed quite sanded down and tame from what I remember. Did they 'water it down' or am I just old with gassed taste buds now?
I'm a original Coke devotee (this surely has at least something to do with why I'm a Person of Size). I've tried drinking Diet Coke before, many times/venues, and I just can't do it. Something about the aspartame just throws it completely out of whack for me. It all ends up being like my imagined approximation of benzene. Coke Zero Sugar comes closer, but still ends up being aftertasteish.
The proper place for Cherry Coke, for me, is the movie theater, paired with intentionally-too-salty popcorn.
If I'm at a place that serves Pepsi, I'll get lemonade or Mug Root Beer (though my true root beer passion is Sprecher, made in Milwaukee and widely available in grocery stores around Chicago).
Anyway, I just subscribed thanks to today's (well, Friday's) mention in the Defector newsletter The Cipher. Glad to be along for the ride!
As a person who prefers Diet Pepsi, I will admit that the next best thing after a Diet Pepsi in a bottle from a gas station is a McDonald’s Diet Coke. I’ve often wondered why Taco Bell has been unable to duplicate with Diet Pepsi what McDonald’s has accomplished with Diet Coke because the Taco Bell Diet Pepsi really isn’t a good experience - too much ice, watered down, not enough syrup. Feel like Taco Bell is really missing an opportunity.
This blog will be fantastic.

Congrats on the new fun newsletter. I’m excited to follow. Two recommendations probably already on your radar:
Galco’s Soda Pop Stop in LA. A carnival of sodas from all over the world.
Coke Museum in Atlanta. Surprisingly fun afternoon for a museum dedicated to commerce. And it actually acknowledges the farce of New Coke!
My vote for best soda/location combo is movie theater root beer. Always makes a movie better.

P.S. Can't think of a better place to drop this, particularly as a non-drinker: https://www.theonion.com/friend-who-doesn-t-drink-announces-plans-to-buy-weirdes-1849022258

Emmy Batch! Are you speaking of the Arboretum McDonalds from your HS days? Because that location is an all-timer, hits different…
